Labor Day in the United States is a federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor the American labor movement and the contributions of workers.Origins and the First ParadeThe holiday emerged during the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century, when harsh working conditions, long hours, and child labor prompted workers to organize. On September 5, 1882, about 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march in New York City in what is considered the first Labor Day parade, organized by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor. While the exact founder remains debated, credit is frequently given to labor leaders Peter J. McGuire or Matthew Maguire.

State Recognition to Federal Holiday
The concept spread quickly across industrial centers. Oregon became the first state to pass a law officially recognizing the holiday on February 21, 1887, with several other states following suit.

National legalization came in 1894 following the violent Pullman Strike in Chicago, where federal troops were deployed and deadly riots ensued. Seeking a conciliatory gesture toward workers—and intentionally choosing September over May Day (which had more radical and socialist associations linked to the Haymarket Affair)—Congress rushed legislation through. President Grover Cleveland signed it into law on June 28, 1894.
